A Massachusetts attorney who forged mortgage assignments so he could fraudulently collect over $1 million in payoff proceeds has avoided prison.

Back in late 2009, officials at Wainright Bank and Trust discovered that Leon Gelfgatt was allegedly forging assignments on high-value properties.

The bank alerted investigators, who uncovered 17 bogus mortgage assignments at local deed registries in the state that Gelfgatt had forged and filed.
