The chief financial officer of Wells Fargo & Co. suggested at an investor conference that behind some of the negative news coverage of his company is reliable ad sales.

On Friday, John Shrewsberry, CFO of the San Francisco-based company, spoke at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference in New York.

During his presentation, Shrewsberry talked about how news reporters and outlets continue to re-tell stories about issues "that have been previously really well aired and vetted."
